Four questions and answers about the cost of living in the UK for a digital nomad

The United Kingdom is a very attractive country for working remotely as a digital nomad for a season. However, it’s important to be clear about certain key aspects before making the move. Otherwise, you might run into issues you'd rather avoid.

In this article, we’ve gathered four of the most common questions many tourists ask themselves. Keep in mind that, regardless of how long you plan to stay, our recommendation is to get an eSIM from Blink eSIM, which costs $3.5. It will allow you to have internet on your phone at maximum speed and unlimited. With it, you'll always have the assurance that you have internet on your phone to stay in touch with your loved ones, book hotels and accommodations, and handle any other needs that may arise during your trip.

Do you need a specific visa to work as a digital nomad in the UK?

Depending on how long you plan to stay in the UK, it makes more or less sense to ask yourself this question. The first thing you should consider is that, unlike many other countries, the UK does not offer a visa specifically designed for digital nomads.

However, you can find visitor visas for short stays or the Innovator Founder Visa, which replaces the now-defunct Innovator Visa. You also have other visas, such as the Global Talent Visa, which allow for a longer stay with more flexibility, another option to consider.

If your plan is to stay for just a few weeks and you won't be working for any local company, you shouldn't worry too much about this issue, as there is no law that prevents you from staying in the country for a few weeks.

How much money do I need per month?

This is one of the most important questions, and as always, the answer is that it depends. The United Kingdom is a country where the cost of living is generally higher than what we are used to in Spain. However, despite this, there are always different options available to consider.

Additionally, it's not the same to be in London, for example, as it is in Belfast, with very different lifestyles. However, you should calculate that accommodation will cost around 1,500 pounds at best, and the transportation and food are also quite expensive, so we don't recommend considering the trip without a budget of at least 2,500 pounds.

Do I need to open a local bank account?

Unless you plan to stay there indefinitely, it’s not necessary, but it will always depend on individual needs. If you’re considering a stay of several months, and you want to rent an apartment in your name, you will need to do so. However, if you're staying in an Airbnb or a similar arrangement, this process is not necessary.

Additionally, you can always turn to digital neobanks, where opening an account is very simple and it will only take a few minutes to have a fully functional card.

What are the best months to live in the UK?

The UK is a country that, as you well know, is not exactly known for its great weather. For this reason, it’s important to choose the right season when planning to visit.
If you're going to be there for a few months, we recommend you choose between the spring season, which spans from March to May, and the summer season, which spans from June to August. This way, we can ensure minimizing the chances of a rainstorm ruining our stay.
